Latrobe Regional Health (LRH) is looking for a dedicated and supportive Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer to join our growing Aboriginal Health Unit on an ongoing, full time basis (hours may be negotiable). The successful application will be committed to improving the health of the Aboriginal community. 

 

The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer supports Aboriginal patients, their families and carers who are receiving services within Latrobe Regional Health. The focus is on improving the delivery of culturally safe and accessible services. The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer also provides advice and support on culturally sensitive matters to staff involved with the direct care of Aboriginal patients, carers and their families. the maintenance of positive relationships with the Aboriginal community, other service providers and government departments is an important aspect of the role. 

 

Key accountabilities for the Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer include, but are not limited to:

  • As assigned, support Aboriginal patients/clients within all inpatient or residential units located upon the main campus of LRH. 
  • Provide advice and support to staff on culturally sensitive and appropriate services. 
  • Improving access for Aboriginal peiple to LRH services.
  • Ensuring services delivered to Aboriginal patients meet standards of excellence and are provided in a positive, team-orientated environment. 
  • Follow up on all Aboriginal discharges as assigned, from the Emergency Department, to ensure linkage to support services to avoid representation. 
  • Liaise and support consumers as assigned on leave, without treatment and that those discharged against medical advice. 
  • Establishing and maintaining a rapport with all Aboriginal support services in the region. 

 

About you

Ideal candidates for this role will:

  • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and accepted by the Aboriginal community. 
  • Have qualifications in Community Development/Social and Community Welfare, Nursing, or other appropriate qualifications and looking for a new career direction, or be working towards is desirable. 
  • Have connection and engagement with the community.
  • Have an interest in health, support services and linking in with community services.
  • Dedication to improving the health of the community. 
  • Have well developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to work as a team member with a range of community and professional groups. 
  • Have an understanding of Aboriginal issues at all levels of government that effect the community in regards to health, justice, education and the social and wellbeing of Aboriginal people would be viewed very highly.  
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal culture, society and kinship networks, as well as the ability to communicate with, and be accepted by, the local Aboriginal community. 
  • A demonstrated commitment and capability to make a positive difference in Aboriginal health and/or wellbeing. 
  • Ability to assist and support Aboriginal patients through advocacy, liaison and support throughout their hospital stay. 
  • A current Victorian driver's licence. 
  • Ability to liaise with many levels of staff within the organisation and able to deliver training and present to various groups of people.
